Choosing a lens

Choosing a lens
Most of us start off with a cheap everyday lens when we get into digital photography. The kit lenses that come bundled with camera bodies are versatile workhorses, with decent zoom ranges that will be useful in most photographic situations. However, there will come a time when you want to add to your creative equipment, and expanding your collection of lenses is a great way to do this. The lens you opt to put on your SLR is one of the most important creative decisions you can make. Other than the sensor, it will have the greatest influence over the quality of your images. Here’s a brief introduction to some of the key things you need to consider when choosing a new lens.

Understanding aperture

Understanding aperture
An aperture is simply a hole in the lens – a variable diaphragm that can be made larger or smaller to control how much light reaches the sensor. You can control the aperture size using the dial on your SLR (or it can be set for you by the camera). The aperture size is measured on the f-stop scale. The relationship between the numbers on the scale can be hard to grasp. The best way to think of them is as fractions, with f/4 being twice as large as f/8, f/8 twice as large as f/16, and so on.

What is metadata: copyright photos in 4 steps

What is metadata: copyright photos in 4 steps
What is metadata? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It confuses many photographers at first.
The metadata definition generally used is that metadata is simply a set of data that describes and gives information about other data. For photographers, that ‘other data’ is your images. Your digital camera will embed information in each photo it takes that identifies what camera created the file, the exposure information and more.

How to shoot in manual mode and get it right every time

How to shoot in manual mode: switch the dial to MDo you find you tend to stay within the auto modes of your digital camera? When your automatic settings deliver great results, it can difficult to think why you should venture beyond.
But using your manual settings can offer enormous creative potential. Shooting in manual mode takes more experience, but the control it gives you over shutter speed, aperture and overall exposure at the same time means you can not only experiment, but gain new confidence in how to use a camera.

Rule of Thirds: use it and break it with confidence

You can break the Rule of Thirds by including lots of sky for dramatic effect
It may sound complex and mathematical, but following the Rule of Thirds in photography is a simple way of improving photo composition. The Rule originates from painting and drawing, but it’s just as valid in photography.

Program Shift: how to combine point-and-shoot with full creative control

Program Shift: how to combine point-and-shoot with full creative control

There are four creative digital camera modes that are worth getting to know, but of these, the P or Program mode is the best place for a complete novice to start. Program mode sets the shutter speed and aperture for you, while still giving you full control over other settings. However, you can switch between these pre-determined shutter speed and aperture combinations by half-pressing the shutter button, using a useful feature known as Program Shift.

Photoshop Face Lift: how to swap bad expressions for smiles

Photoshop Face Lift: how to swap bad expressions for smiles in your family portraits and group photos
Facial expression is one of the most important factors in any type of portrait photography. That’s especially true of group photos and family portrait photography, where a grimace can ruin an otherwise perfect shot.
What’s more, the bigger the group the greater the probability that at any time one or more of them will be pulling an unintentional shocker. Luckily you can use a simple Photoshop face exchange technique and ‘fix’ an expression later on to save your otherwise perfect shot. The key to this, though, is to have the presence of mind to fire off a few similar frames when shooting the group – which is always a good idea.

Written by Steve Patterson. In this Photoshop effects tutorial, we’ll learn how to easily add a star-filled sky to a night time photo. I’ll be using Photoshop CS5 throughout the tutorial but any recent version of Photoshop will work just fine. There’s nothing quite as peaceful as being outside at night, looking up a cloudless sky and seeing an endless display of stars sparkling and twinkling above you, stretching far off into the horizon in all directions. It really makes you stop and realize just how tiny we are compared to everything that’s out there, far beyond our reach, and even beyond our imagination.

Photo To Sketch With More Detail In Photoshop

Photo to detailed, colored sketch in Photoshop. Image © 2011 Photoshop Essentials.com.

Written by Steve Patterson. In a previous Photoshop tutorial, we learned how to convert a photo into a sketch using a technique that works great with portraits, since it tends to leave out small, unwanted details like wrinkles and other skin blemishes while focusing more on the general features we want to see in the sketch, like a person’s eyes, nose and lips. Sometimes though, when working with other types of images like landscape or nature photos, buildings and architecture, still lifes, or really any image that doesn’t focus on people, you’ll want the sketch to include those tiny details the previous technique would ignore. In this tutorial, we’ll learn a slightly different way to convert a photo to a sketch that’s usually better suited for these other types of images since it often does an amazing job of bringing out fine details.
