Vibrating Colors in Photoshop Elements

Photoshop Elements - Vibrating Colors
The latest version of the “Big” Photoshop had Vibrance as a new feature to make a photo appear brilliantly colorful beyond just increasing normal saturation. Nevertheless, if you have only an old Photoshop Element at your disposal, there’s no reason to lose heart. Do some tricks with the layers and you’ll boost the colors on your photo.

Removing luminance noise II. in Photoshop

Removing luminance noise II in Photoshop
When it comes to noise, we can see “ants” swarming and “confetti rain”. The former is the so-called luminance noise, which can seriously interfere with details of the photo. We have tried in several articles to decrease color noise (or confetti rain if you like). Luminance noise is a bit more stubborn and so harder to make it go away without a trace. The new versions of Photoshop offer a separate menu for eliminating this noise. DigiRetus, however, always goes off the beaten track. This time too there is a way.

Color replacement II. in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorials - Color replacement II.
Until now, you have probably known the Channel Mixer as a fine tool for black-and-white images. Well, it is perfectly suitable for other purposes, for example for swapping two colors. The last time when we did something like that (using Replace Color), a couple of red tomatoes became blue. To show that we’re full of great ideas, this time it will be the other way around.

Selection I. in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Selection I.
One of the basic requirements in photo editing is accuracy. It is a must to select the area or colors to be changed accurately. Photoshop’s Select menu has contained the rarely mentioned Similar command for several application versions. Now we briefly introduce this command, and thus explain how to select areas of a similar color but different brightness (e.g. the sky).

History Brush in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - History Brush
History Brush is one of the most versatile retouching tools in Photoshop. It can be used to restore a modified, retouched photo to an earlier state. Thus, it enables non-linear editing in addition to the traditional, linear method. During the editing process, you are not limited to the History palette but you can also reach back to a previous state regarding single picture elements. When applied carefully, this technique can make past and present mingle nicely. This tip explains only a small part of the possibilities offered by the History brush, but you’ll also meet the name in several future articles.

Film Grain in Photoshop

Photoshop Tutorial - Film Grain
Oh yes, we know there’s a Film Grain filter in Photoshop that emulates the effect by two clicks. But we think it doesn’t look nice enough—it alters the picture too much, and anyway, who’d read an article about “set it and click OK”? So we get back to our good old friends, the layers, and sprinkle the photo with a handful of grains that can be refined after applying.

Mock-up effect in Photoshop

Photoshop Tutorial - Mock-up effect
Architectural cameras and lenses often have a Swing or Tilt feature which tilts the focal plane and thus provides a weird depth-of-focus effect. Sometimes, primarily with landscapes or cityscapes photographed from above, you get the impression as if you were looking at a mock-up. Now we try to emulate this effect using Photoshop.

Merging photos in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Merging photos
Several readers have inquire about how to simply merge two or more photos into one. This isn’t a very difficult task, but beginners may find they have cut off more than they could chew. Still, it takes only two layers and the good old layer mask trick—it’s simpler than you’d think

Undo I. in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Undo I.
The following tip offers a helping hand for beginners. Commands you give may sometimes bring an unwanted result. Or you may mess up a photo by unintendedly erasing an area. In such cases, you will want to step back to an earlier stage, perhaps start over retouching the picture from the very beginning. What should you do?

Pseudo-infrared filter in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Pseudo-infrared filter
Infrared photography is a very interesting area of taking photos. The appearance of digital cameras made it easy for amateurs to access this formerly rarely used area. However, the rather expensive image detectors and infrared filters prevent many from exploring this world. As an alternative, you may try to reach a similar effect by photo manipulation.

Shadows and highlights in Photoshop

Photoshop Tutorials - Shadows and highlights
We have earlier published a tip titled “Lightening shadows”. The problem is the same here: to deal with broader dynamics ranges in a photo. Too dark and too light areas can often dominate a photo. We’d like to see more details “under” the shadows, or repair some of the bleaching. Now we try the "mysterious" Apply Image command. This is a rather obscure option although it can come handy by a number of different editing methods, so it is suitable for multiple purposes. For example, the one we are trying to accomplish right now.

Perspective correction II. in Photoshop

Photoshop Tutorials - Perspective correction II.
We have found another tip for perspective correction. The perspective distortion that can be experienced mainly in photographs taken with wide-angle lenses is especially annoying in the case of building photos. The phenomenon, however, cannot be strictly viewed as an error. In certain cases it lends the picture a unique visuality and contributes to its message. Other times, it's plainly unpleasant. This article is about those other times. In an earlier tip, we’ve already mentioned Photoshop’s Perspective menu command, although we’ve introduced a slightly different method then. The current procedure will be very similar, but we’ll also take a closer look at this command. After finishing the correction, we’ll also use another handy device, the Crop Tool to finalize the photo.

Increasing contrast IV. in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Increasing contrast IV.
Let’s take a look another of the million different ways to increase contrast. We have already discussed the Apply Image command that can be used for such a purpose as well. This time, our aim is to enhance contrast less in the light areas and more in the dark ones. We’ll be fast as lightning and simple as a stone. Or as a contrast increase procedure.

Removing luminance noise in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorials - Removing luminance noise
On we go, fighting noise. In an earlier tip, we have explained how to remove color noise. Today’s foe is a tougher one—luminance noise. It is a great pity that Photoshop’s current versions still don’t contain a dedicated automatic or easy-to-use noise filtering feature, and thus we ourselves have to deal with noise in several steps if we find it annoying.

Lightening shadows II. in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Lightening shadows II.
We aim to lighten only the lower, shadowed part of the photo, and only the dark areas. The sky is appropriately light, so there’s no need to modify it. Photoshop’s basic lightening tools are not suitable for this purpose as they affect the whole of the picture. Versions CS and CS2 already contain the Shadows & Highlights tool for controlling the lightness of light and dark areas. However, it is not always needed, and besides, many people still use older PS versions that don’t offer such a feature. They will surely benefit from this article.

Undo II. in Photoshop

Photoshop Tutorial - Undo II.
Our last article on undoing mentioned that you can specify the number of steps stored on the History palette among the program’s options. A higher number means a significant memory consumption. But you can store several hundred steps and go back this much if you want to see an earlier status of the edited picture. But what to do if you want to save memory and just allow to store a few dozen steps? You can still get back to even a thousand steps—provided that you saved the state you want.

Selection II. in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Selection II.
One of the most essential points in image editing is accurate selection. You often need to enhance or modify just a part of the photo while leaving all other areas unchanged. If you define (select) the element to be changed inaccurately, you’ll get an inappropriate result, no matter how nicely you work. This topic was neglected a bit until now, but here’s a tip to recover the loss. There are scores of tools and methods for selecting picture elements. Now we introduce one suitable for selecting different colors—Color Range.

Fade in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorial - Fade
The name of Photoshop’s Fade feature may sound a bit misleading—you may first think of the fading of colors or tones in a picture. Well, this is something the feature can do, but actually it is for controlling the strength and blending of an earlier editing action. In many cases, it can substitute for the duplication of the background layer and the setting of blending mode and opacity of the layers. How is it done? After applying a filter (e.g. sharpening) or a correction action (e.g. lightening) on your picture, you can weaken the effect using Fade, and you can even set a separate blending mode for it. It may seem complicated, but in fact it isn’t. Here’s an easy example for you.

Selective blur in Photoshop

Free Photoshop Tutorials - Selective blur
The illusion of movement can be created even in a totally static picture using the Radial Blur effect. Just like you quickly zoomed onto the main theme and recorded that in the photo. The picture will become more dynamic, and the main theme will be more strongly separated from the background. Now let's see how this works!

Selection IV. in Photoshop

Photoshop Tutorial - Selection IV.
The very base of any work with Photoshop—or any other image editor—is precise selection. You need selection tools not only for removing, replacing or inserting picture elements, but also for changing the colors, lightness or contrast of an area. Any area selection is not final—you can modify it as your concept or needs change. Now we'll select a contiguous area, increase the size of the selection with the Grow command, and blur the selection in order to avoid the result looking obviously manipulated.

Copying a photographic element in Photoshop

Copying a photographic element in Photoshop

We haven’t dealt with Patch Tool, a member of the intelligent Clone Tools. The time has come. It helps to copy and paste a selected area or pattern into another part of the photo and as a result we can disguise a fault or fill in empty spaces. The significance of Patch tool lies in its ability to match the surroundings of the copied “patch” with the new area.

Selective sharpening in Photoshop

Selective sharpening in Photoshop
This article can be viewed as a sequel to the previous one, since we raised the question there: how to sharpen an area of a picture without affecting other parts. It is very simple, you just need to rely on your masking skills. The rest is child's play.

Digital Velvia

 Photoshop Retouch - Digital Velvia
Somehow my digital camera never produces pictures like those in the latest landscape albums I bought. The film Velvia 50, renowned for its excellent saturation, is and old friend of nature photographers. Hundreds of digital photographers and doyens of Photoshop actions and plugins tried to emulate a similar effect, with more or less success. Even if we don't have a philosopher’s stone, we join the regiment of Velvia imitators. We do have an advantage over many such plugins and actions: we offer a possible solution free of charge. You have to decide for yourself, whether you find it effective enough.
