This Photoshop tutorial teaches you to create a shoe Icon. The dimensions used in this tutorial is : width 300px, height 300px and resolution 72px. This tutorial clearly demonstrates the use of Pen Tool. At the end of this tutorial you will be able to master the pen tool and create the custom shapes of your own like the one shown below, rather than hunting for them on the net.

Before starting the tutorial lets get familiar with the pen tools (P):

1. Pen Tool : This tool is used to create straight lines, curves (arc) or ‘S’ shaped curves. Using these technique we can create more complex shapes.
2. Freeform Pen Tool : This tool is used to create freeform shapes.
3. Add Anchor Point Tool : This tool is used to add anchor points between any two points.
4. Delete Anchor Point Tool : As the name indicates, this tool is used to delete points between two anchor points.
5. Convert Point Tool : Using this tool we can convert the shapes into anchor points.

1. First lets create a new document of dimension 335x335px of resolution 72px and with background color #ffff00
   
   
2. Select the Pen Tool (P). From the layer options panel set the color to Black.
   
   
3. Using pen tool draw the shoe shape as shown in the image below. Name this layer as shoe. While using the Pen tool, press alt key and click on the anchor point to get the next curve otherwise the second curve will result in ‘S’ curve instead of an arc. You should draw the shoe as shown in the image. If you face any problem in getting a good shape, copy the image below, open it in photoshop and draw on the points shown in the image.
   
   
   Once you draw the shoe outline the layer palette should look like the image below
   
   
   and the path
4. Press x to change the background color to foreground color and now your foreground color will be white. Using pen tool draw the custom shape as shown in the images. You can copy the images and paste in the Photoshop to get the desired shape, incase you have any problem.
   
   
   
5. Next we will create the Soul part of the shoe using pen tool. You should create the shape as shown in the image below:
   
   
   
6. Next we will create foot part of the shoe. Try to create a shape similar to the one shown in the image below. You can add or delete the anchor points using the Add / Delete Anchor Point Tool
   
   
7. Next we will create top / leg part of the shoe. You should draw a shape as shown below. While working on smaller shapes always zoom up say to 400% or higher, and create the shapes. This will enable you to easily position the points and the resulting shape will also be sharper when reduced to its original size.
   
   
8. The next series of images will show how to draw the lace for the shoe. Zoom up your document while working on this part and try to position your point carefully to get a perfect shape.

   5. Draw 3 more shapes as shown in the image below to get the folds for the shoe. You can always edits the points / alter the angle of the curves in the shape by using the Convert Point Tool.
      
      
      
      
      
9. We will next create the mouth for out shoe. Draw the shape as shown in the image below and don’t forget to use the alt button to get a perfect curve.
   
   
10. Next we will focus on creating the inner parts of the mouth like base and teeth. Using pen tool and foreground color as #ffffff draw the base as shown in the image below
    
    
11. We will now create the tooth for the shoe. Draw the tooth as shown in the image below.
    
    
12. Next create duplicate layer of the tooth shape and press ctrl + T. Right click on the shape and select flip vertically. Position the layer as shown in the image below. You should rotate the shape and increase the height to get the shape of the image shown below.
    
    
    
13. Follow the step 11 and draw the next tooth for the shoe. Press Ctrl + T right click on the shape and select flip horizontally to get the position as shown in the image .below.
    
    
14. Follow the step 11 and draw the next tooth for the shoe. Press Ctrl + T right click on the shape and select flip vertically to place it in the position as shown in the image below.
    
    
15. Again follow the step 11 to draw the next tooth and position it as shown in the image below:
    
    
16. Next create the shape with the pen tool as shown in the image below:
    
    
17. We will then create the last tooth repeating the step 12 and position it as shown below.
    
    
18. Finally using brush tool set the master diameter to 2px and color to white and draw some rough strokes to get the folds for the shoe. Your final image should look like the one below.
